About CBEC:

CBEC stands for Central Board of Excise & Customs. It comes under Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Govt of India.

Central Excise Inspector Salary after 7th Pay Commission & Facilities:

  • Central Excise Inspector is a Group B Non-Gazetted Post.
  • Grade Pay 4600.
  • Level 7. Starting Basic Pay Rs. 44900.
  • In hand salary of Central Excise Inspector after 7th Pay Commission is around Rs. 55000 for Class A city. For complete Salary Details: Click Here
  • CGHS Facility for Medical, HRA, TA, DA (to compensate for inflation), Advances etc.

Job Description of Excise Inspector:

Desk Posting:

  • Assessment of Goods & Services Tax of Assesse is done by Excise Inspector and then they put it up to Superintendent.
  • Normal file work, noting, drafting, report making, presentation etc.
  • Looking into matters related to registration request by manufacturers, verification of their units etc.

Field Posting:

  • An Excise Inspector deals with the goods manufactured in his circle and checks if there is any evasion of excise duty by the manufacturers.
  • Monitoring Goods to be exported and put seal of excise department on them.
  • Prevention of Smuggling.
  • You may have to assist search and raid teams.



Central Excise Inspector Uniform:

It is not mandatory to wear uniform. In fact no on wears it normally. It is worn when one goes on a raid or some special parade or training.

Post Selection Procedure:

  1. SSC forward your dossiers to CBEC HQ (Delhi).
  2. CBEC ask preferences for Cadre (Delhi CEX Zone, Chennai CEX Zone as so on).
  3. After receiving preferences CBEC allots based on Merit & Preference.

Posting:

  • You will be posted to Airport, Custom House, Regional CBEC HQ etc.
  • You may go to Customs on deputation.

Transfer:

Inter Commissionerate Transfer: An Excise Inspector is eligible after 2 years of service. But he loses his seniority on transfer.

Central Excise Inspector Training:

A newly recruited Excise Inspector is trained in National Academy of Customs, Excise & Narcotics (NACEN). Training period is easy just like College days. Just to give you an overview of your future responsibilities.

Central Excise Inspector Promotion:

The promotion depends from circle to circle. So, there is a great variation.

Perhaps, Worst post promotion-wise.

Also, one has to clear a confirmation test to become Permanent.

You become eligible to be promoted to Superintendent after 8 Years of Service.

While people in Income Tax, Customs etc get 5-6 promotion, an Excise Inspector get only 1 or 2. Yes one or two.

A majority of Excise Inspectors retire as Superintendent (GP 4800).

While a few manages to get to Assistant Commissioner (GP 5400)

Central Excise Inspector Corruption:

Don’t join this post solely for this purpose. There is corruption in this department but due to increase in transparency it has reduced considerably. Moreover there is always risk of getting caught. And extra income of central excise inspector mainly depends upon his place of posting.

Pros:

  • Social Status: You will be respected by your friends, relatives and people you meet in day to day life.
  • Enjoys more power than an Income Tax Inspector as an Excise Inspector has signing authority.
  • Field Posting gives you real authority. You will have jurisdiction over an area called ‘Sector”.
  • Will get to learn many new things regarding taxation, accountancy, commerce etc.
  • Stability: Transfers are not that frequent and you enjoy a stable life. All India posting liability begins after one becomes Assistant Commissioner, but chances of that are remote.
  • Work-Life Balance: Though workload depends on work assigned and zone allotted. Working hours are fixed 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, except when you accompany a raiding team. The workload is not much and you get enough time for family and further exam preparation.



Cons:

  • Slowest Promotion, only one or two promotion in entire career.
  • No real power unless you are in field posting.

Physical Requirement:

For male Candidates

Height: 157.5 cms. (Relaxation of 5 cms in case of Gorkhas, Assamese, Garhwalis and members of Scheduled Tribe).

Chest: 81 cms. (fully expanded with a minimum expanses of 5 cms.).

Walking : 1600 metres in 15 minutes.

Cycling : 8 Kms. In 30 minutes.

For Female Candidates

Height: 152 cms.

Weight: 48 Kgs

(Height Relaxable by 2.5 cms and weight by 2 Kg in case of Gorkhas, Assamese, Garhwalis and members of Scheduled Tribe).

Walking : 1 Km. in 20 minutes

Cycling : 3 Kms. in 25 minutes

Eligibility for Excise Inspector:

  • Age limit is 20-30 Years of age.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University or equivalent.
