Income Tax Inspector Salary After 7th Pay Commission:

  • Income Tax Inspector is a Group C Non Gazetted Post
  • Grade Pay 4600.
  • Level 7. Starting Basic Pay Rs. 44900.

  • Income Tax Officer Salary is equivalent to the salary of an Assistant Audit Officer (Grade 4800). Click Here to See
  • CGHS Facility for Medical, HRA, TA, DA (to compensate for inflation), Advances etc.
  • Petrol Allowance, Allowance for Telephone Bill.
  • Quarters: IT department has quarters in most of the cities. If they are vacant you can get it within 1-2 months. Otherwise it may take upto 2-3 years.

Income Tax Inspector Job Profile:

Assessment Section:

  • In beginning, you will be given a desk job and a clerical work profile like assessment of tax to be paid by individuals, companies etc under their circle, assisting ITO in administrative work and file handing.
  • Handling Refund Claims, queries related to TDS.
  • Look into complaints of Tax evasion.

Non Assessment Section:

  • Conducting Raids.
  • Gathering of intel and evidence against tax evaders.


  • You will be posted in one of the zones of Income Tax on the basis of your preference and merit in SSC CGL Exam.


There are two type of transfers available in the department:

  • Annual General Transfer
  • Inter Charge Transfer 

Transfer is possible but it’s not too easy. There are few things that should be in your favor.

  • Vacancy must be there in the zone you want to get transferred to.
  • One should have a valid reason like Spouse Ground, Disability etc.
  • You seniors/administration should be cooperative. 

Moreover if you don’t want transfers you don’t have to worry as you are not liable to be transferred until you become Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax (ACIT). After becoming ACIT you have All India Liability.

Income Tax InspectorYou start here.
Income Tax Officer (ITO)6-7 Years.
Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax (ACIT)10-12 Years.
Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax (DCIT)4-5 Years.
Joint Commissioner of Income Tax (JCIT)4-5 Years.
Additional Commissioner of Income Tax (ADCIT)5-6 Years

One may go up to the level of Additional Commissioner of Income Tax if one joins at Inspector level at an early age say 21-24 yrs of age.

Generally people retires as Joint Commissioner of Income Tax.

  • Social Status: You will be respected by your friends, relatives and people you meet in day to day life.
  • Promotion: Promotions are fairly fast and you get up to the level of Additional Commissioner of Income Tax (ACIT).
  • Will get to learn many new things regarding taxation, accountancy, commerce etc.
  • Get to meet a lot of people and have wonderful experiences.
  • Income Tax Inspector Powers: You will become powerful once you become ITO i.e your first promotion.
  • Stability: Transfers are not that frequent and you enjoy a stable life.
  • Infrastructure & Technology wise, it is one of the best departments in India.
  • Most of their offices are in Metros, State Capitals, Urban, Suburban area so you will be able to live a cool lifestyle.
  • Work-Life Balance: Though workload depends on work assigned and zone allotted. Working hours are fixed 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM, except when you accompany a raiding team. The workload is not much and you get enough time for family and further exam preparation.


  • May have to travel a lot during Investigation.
  • No real power until you get your first promotion i.e. Income Tax Officer (ITO).
  • Not much respect inside the department as an inspector.
  • No signing authority at Inspector Level. Though an Excise Inspector has signing authority.

Income Tax Inspector Uniform:

It is a non-uniform job, so there is no dress code.

Income Tax Inspector Bribe:

Cut Offs:



  • Age limit is 20-30 Years of age.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University or equivalent.

How to become Income Tax Inspector Exam:

  1. Is home state posting guaranteed if one scores good marks?

    • Zone is allotted on the basis of merit and preference, so if u have good marks and there are enough vacancies in the Zone, you will get home posting.

      • Hi…suppose I get home state…does this mean I will stay in my home state till retirement??

        • On first promotion to Income Tax Officer, you will still be in same state. On second promotion, when you become Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, then you have all India liability. So if u want home state for life don’t take any promotion after Income Tax Officer
