Preventive Officer

Preventive Officer (Customs Officer) is a post under Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC), Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance. A Preventive Officer is a type of Customs Officer.

Preventive Officer Salary & Facilities:

  • Preventive Officer (PO) is a Group B Gazetted (Non-ministerial) Post.
  • Grade Pay 4800.
  • Level 7. Starting Basic Pay Rs. 44,900.

  • CGHS Facility for Medical, HRA, TA, DA (to compensate for inflation), Advances etc.
  • It may take 5-6 Years for one to get Govt Quarter as the waiting list is very long due to heavy recruitment in last few years.

Preventive Officer Job Description:

Desk Posting:

  • The work is just like another ASO post.
  • Normal file work, noting-drafting, maintaining & monitoring files, report making, correspondence etc.
  • The working hours will be regular office hours.

Field Posting:

  • In field posting the officer is posted on Seaports & Airports.
  • Prevention of Smuggling activities like Gold Smuggling, Drug & Explosives Smuggling, other things banned by Govt.
  • Monitor proper and timely payment of Custom Duties.
  • A preventive officer has to check boats, cargo, ships coming from foreign countries and has the power to confiscate goods and arrest people if illegalities are found.
  • Auctioning the confiscated goods is also the duty of a Preventive Officer.
  • The work is done is shifts. And you have to work overtime if you are on a raid or if similar situation demands. And may have to work Night Shifts.


Posting is done on Airports and Seaports.

A newly recruited Preventive Officer gets posting in one of the 6 Customs Zone i.e Chennai, Cochin, Kolkata, Mumbai, Goa, Viskhapatnam.

They can go on deputation to other Excise Zones for a period of 1-3 Years.

Preventive Officer Promotion:

Preventive Officer (Inspector)You start here.
Superintendent of Customs (Group-B Gazetted)8-10 Years. Eligibility for promotion is 8 years of service. One can also become Appraiser (Explained Below)
Assistant Commissioner (Group-A)IRS Officer Level Post.
Deputy CommissionerVery Few get upto this level.


  • Promotion Wise: Examiner > Preventive Officer > Excise Inspector.
  • One has to clear Confirmation Exam after a period of 2 years to become permanent.
  • A person joining at an early age of 23-26 can become Deputy Commissioner in the long run.

Preventive Officer to Appraiser:

A Preventive Officer can choose to become Appraiser instead of Superintendent of Customs.

Example: There are 10 vacancies of Appraiser, out of that 20% i.e 2 will be reserved for Preventive Officers. But the catch is eligibility for an Examiner to become Appraiser is 3 years of service while for Preventive Officer it is 8 years of service. So a PO should have 8 years of service and have to be senior to 3 Year old Examiner. Moreover, there is along queue of PO to become Appraiser. So it may take upto 13-14 years for a Preventive Officer to become Appraiser.

Preventive Officer Uniform: 

Preventive Officers are required to wear Uniform on a regular basis. The uniform is of white color as shown in the pic above.


  • Power: Since this job carries with it a 3-Star Uniform, you will have a lot of power.
  • Social Status: You will be respected by your friends, relatives and people you meet in day to day life. You will be respected and feared whenever you go on search, raids, etc.
  • The job is very interesting and you will get to learn many new things regarding customs, international trade etc.
  • Adventurous Job: Raids, Search, Seize, Detain, Travel.
  • You may get to meet a lot of persons and have wonderful experiences.
  • While posted on airport you may get to meet and click pics with Celebrities.


  • Promotions are not fast as in case of Examiners and one can manage only 2-3 promotions and go up to the level of Deputy Commissioner.
  • One may have to work Night Shifts.
  • No Home Posting: Since they are posted in only few coastal cities, one may never have Home Posting and work away from Home for the rest of your life.
  • Not suitable to female candidates.

Preventive Officer Cut Offs:


Preventive Officer Physical Test:

For male Candidates

Height: 157.5 cms. (Relaxation of 5 cms in case of Gorkhas, Assamese, Garhwalis and members of Scheduled Tribe).

Chest: 81 cms. (fully expanded with a minimum expanses of 5 cms.).

Walking : 1600 metres in 15 minutes.

Cycling : 8 Kms. In 30 minutes.

For Female Candidates

Height: 152 cms.

Weight: 48 Kgs

(Height Relaxable by 2.5 cms and weight by 2 Kg in case of Gorkhas, Assamese, Garhwalis and members of Scheduled Tribe).

Walking : 1 Km. in 20 minutes

Cycling : 3 Kms. in 25 minutes


  • Age limit: Not exceeding 30 Years of age.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University or equivalent.
  • One has to clear Computer Proficiency Exam (CPT) conducted by SSC.
